Involvement of Medial Temporal Lobe Structures in Memory and Perception
نویسنده
چکیده
Beginning approximately a decade and a half ago, it was suggested that some structures that are considered to be part of the "medial temporal lobe memory system" could play a role in perception as well. The implications of this view, interpreted broadly, are that medial temporal lobe structures may be understood as an extension of the ventral visual stream and that their functions cannot be described exclusively in terms of memory. Considerable evidence now supports the view that medial temporal lobe structures are involved in nonmnemonic aspects of cognition, such as perception. This discovery allows for a fuller understanding of the involvement of these structures in mental phenomena than does a purely mnemonic account of their function. See the related review by Suzuki, "Perception and the Medial Temporal Lobe: Evaluating the Current Evidence," in this issue of Neuron.

Perception and the Medial Temporal Lobe: Evaluating the Current Evidence
A dominant view in the learning and memory literature states that a subset of anatomically related structures within the medial temporal lobe (MTL), including the hippocampus, entorhinal, perirhinal, and parahippocampal cortices, forms a functionally related system specialized for declarative memory but not for perception. However, recent reports challenge this view, suggesting instead that the...

Objective(s): Cognitive deficit is a common problem in epilepsy. A major concern emergent from the use of antiepileptic drugs includes their side effects on learning and memory. Herbal medicine is considered a complementary and alternative therapy in epilepsy. Apigenin is a safe flavone with antioxidant properties. However, there is little information about the benefic...

A recent proposal that structures of the medial temporal lobe support visual perception in addition to memory challenges the long-standing idea that the ability to acquire new memories is separable from other cognitive and perceptual functions. In four experiments, we have put this proposal to a rigorous test. Six memory-impaired patients with well characterized lesions of either the hippocampa...

Patients with epilepsy are at the risk of cognitive disorders and abnormalities of behavior. The purpose of this study is to compare the episodic memory and semantic memory in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and healthy control subjects. This is a causal – comparative study. The study population was patients with epilepsy Iranian epilepsy society in Tehran, that, among 20 patients wi...
متن کاملIt's All Coming Back to Me Now: Perception and Memory in Amnesia
Medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures may constitute a representational hierarchy, rather than a dedicated system for memory. Barense et al. (2012) show that intact memory for object features can interfere with perception of complex objects in individuals with MTL amnesia.
